Monsters vs. Aliens

Up took the top prizes for animated feature at the 37th annual Annie Awards. The Disney-Pixar movie won two awards — one for best picture and best director for Pete Docter — while the Disney holiday special Prep and Landing took best animated TV production as one of its three wins. The awards were spread around this year, with both Coraline and The Princess and the Frog each winning three awards in the feature film side, followed by two for Up and single wins for Monsters vs. Aliens and Fantastic Mr.

"Monsters vs. Aliens" is this weekend's Free kids' movie at Campbell 16 Cine, 4005 S. Ave. Get there early for the 10 a.m.

Rentrak Corporation , today announced the Top Ten movies of 2009 in North America based on consumer spending from each key movie distribution platform including theatrical box office, home video sell-through, home video rental and transactional video-on-demand (VOD). Cross-platform insights include: All Rentrak Top Ten ranking charts are based on gross revenue generated during the 2009 calendar year.  

Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn't exactly fit in with his tribe's longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup's world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view. But while TV manufacturers are making huge investments in 3D TV technology, and several expect to have 3D-capable sets and other home entertainment products on sale in Australia by the middle of the year for watching Blu-ray discs and playing console games, local broadcasters are less enthusiastic.  

Last year's animated film Monsters vs. Aliens, will kick off the Imlay City Downtown Development Authority's (DDA) free Winter Movie Series. The first of four free films will show at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Imlay City Cinema at 543 North Cedar Street.  

Slumbering in a drab-looking office building here, Blue Sky Studios, the animated-movie division of 20th Century Fox, has long been dismissed as much of a threat. Nobody could catch DreamWorks and Pixar, moviedom figured, especially not a quiet studio that got its start with an animated laxative commercial. So much for that theory.
